More about this artwork

by Aert van der Neer (c. 1650 - c. 1655)This captivating work of art, by the celebrated Dutch Golden Age painter Aert van der Neer, presents a serene and meticulously crafted nocturnal landscape. Van der Neer's mastery in illustrating night scenes comes alive in this atmospheric depiction of a river landscape illuminated by the gentle glow of the moon.At the center of the painting, the full moon casts its reflective light upon the tranquil river, guiding the viewer’s eye towards the various elements scattered gracefully along the banks. The composition is balanced with a mix of rustic and architectural elements on either side of the river, including crumbling structures and traditional thatched cottages that hint at the simple, rural life of the period. The left foreground features figures and a horse-drawn cart, suggesting the movement of people and goods, commonplace in Dutch landscapes of the time. Across the river, the landscape is dotted with boats, some moored and others gently gliding on the water, emphasizing the river's role as a vital artery for transportation and commerce. The silhouette of a windmill in the mid-distance is quintessentially Dutch, reinforcing the painting's setting and underscoring the importance of windmills in 17th-century Dutch society, both as landmarks and as essential tools for managing water.Van der Neer’s use of color and light effectively conveys the calmness of the evening and the beauty of the Dutch countryside under moonlight. The reflection of the moon on the water and the soft diffusion of its light through the sky demonstrate the artist’s delicate handling of light shades and nuanced tones.

Aert van der Neer, or Aernout or Artus (c. 1603 – 9 November 1677), was a landscape painter of the Dutch Golden Age, specializing in small night scenes lit only by moonlight and fires, and snowy winter landscapes, both often looking down a canal or river. He was a contemporary of Aelbert Cuyp and Meindert Hobbema, and like the latter he lived and died in comparative obscurity.
