More about this artwork

This captivating piece by Paul Sérusier, a leading figure of the post-Impressionist movement known as Nabis, is steeped in a blend of mysticism and simplicity. The painting titled "Bretonnes, Réunion Dans Le Bois Sacré" (Breton Women, Meeting in the Sacred Grove), created between 1891 and 1893, depicts a serene gathering of Breton women in a mythical, sacred wood.Dominating the canvas are the striking, towering blue trunks of the trees, which not only imbue the scene with a dream-like quality but also evoke a sense of tranquility and reverence. These slender vertical forms contrast beautifully with the horizontal grouping of the women dressed in traditional Breton costumes, their white headdresses gently highlighted against the darker hues of their garments. The artist uses flat areas of bold color to create a tapestry of visual interest that removes any sense of conventional perspective and instead invites the viewer to focus on the symbolism and emotion conveyed through color and form. The deliberate simplicity of shapes and the harmonious palette of blues, yellows, and greens reflect Sérusier’s affinity for a style that transcends naturalistic representation and moves towards a more expressive, almost spiritual rendering of subjects. This work not only captures the essence of Brittany’s cultural heritage but also exemplifies Sérusier's interest in depicting scenes of communal life infused with a deeply personal, almost mystical appreciation of nature.
