More about this artwork

"Brumes du matin," a mesmerizing work by the notable Nabi artist Paul Sérusier, is a captivating example of his exploration into the emotive power of color and form. Created between 1907 and 1909, this painting captures a serene moment in the daily life of two women amidst a lush, softly undulating landscape. In this evocative scene, the women are depicted engaged in a quiet activity, possibly needlework, with one standing and the other seated on the grassy slope. The standing woman, dressed in a dark blouse and a red, polka-dotted skirt, gracefully handles a piece of fabric. Her companion, attired in a dark dress complemented by a warm-hued apron, focuses intently on her task. The simplicity and subdued nature of their activities evoke a sense of peaceful coexistence with the nature surrounding them. The background is an impressionistic blend of greens and blues, dotted with tree forms that suggest a misty, early morning light. This setting creates a dreamlike atmosphere, enhancing the overall theme of tranquility and introspection. Sérusier’s technique of using distinct, yet harmoniously blended brushstrokes contributes to a textured mosaic of color that vibrates with an almost musical quality.
