More about this artwork

Jules Pascin's painting "Two Figures and Cupid" (c. 1920) captures an intimate and whimsical scene that combines elements of fantasy and real life. The painting depicts two figures—a partially clothed man wearing a striped, blue-and-white shirt seated on a red and black sofa, and a nude woman reclining next to him. The woman’s pose and the expression visible on her face suggest a mix of languid relaxation and seductive allure. Her gaze, directed outward, seems to invite the viewer into this private moment.Floating above these figures, a small, mischievous representation of Cupid adds a mythical dimension to the scene. With his tiny wings and playful demeanor, Cupid is surrounded by a smoky, cloud-like form sprinkled with vibrant flowers, emphasizing the dreamlike quality of the painting. The setting is accentuated by a decorative tile pattern in teal and white, which frames the central scene and adds a rich texture to the composition. This background hints at an exotic or luxurious locale, perhaps suggesting a moment frozen in a lavish, otherworldly space.Pascin’s use of contrasts—between the clothed and the nude, the earthly and the ethereal, the decorative and the plain—invites viewers to explore themes of love, temptation, and fantasy.

Nudes, street scenes and landscapes of women and tropical locations by Bulgarian-born American painter Jules Pascin (1885-1930). Born to an affluent family, Pascin was educated in Austria and Germany before moving to Paris in 1905. It was there that he became associated with the Modernist movement. He attached himself to the human condition and was known for painting portraits of nude and half-dressed women. He stands in the grand tradition of the romantic, bohemian artist.
