More about this artwork

This captivating painting by Bulgarian-born artist Jules Pascin, titled "Hermine Aux Fruits" (Hermine with Fruits), created in 1919, depicts a serene and contemplative scene of a woman, presumably Hermine, sitting with a bowl of fruits. Painted during Pascin's residence in Paris, an era known for its bohemian spirit and artistic vibrancy, this work beautifully encapsulates the intimate expressionism for which Pascin was celebrated. In the painting, Hermine is portrayed in a subdued, perhaps pensive pose, gently resting her hands around a plate brimming with fruits. The use of muted yet expressive colors coupled with fluid brushstrokes adds a dreamlike quality to the canvas, suggesting a moment of quiet introspection or tiredness. Hermine's figure is masterfully rendered with a blend of green, blue, and yellow tones, mirroring the complexity and depth of human emotions. Her downward gaze invites viewers to ponder her thoughts or feelings at this captured moment.Pascin's style here is illustrative of his skillful play with color and form, using a somewhat abstract approach without relinquishing the warmth of his subjects. "Hermine Aux Fruits" not only showcases Pascin’s talent in depicting the human form with emotional depth but also reflects the lifestyle and cultural milieu of early 20th-century Paris that he frequently inhabited.
