More about this artwork

Auguste Rodin, a master sculptor known for his expressive artistry, also created captivating drawings that showcase his deep understanding of human anatomy and movement. One such work is "Studieblad met twee naakte vrouwen, op de rug gezien", an evocative study of two nude women seen from the back. This drawing, executed between 1850 and 1917, highlights Rodin's fluid drawing style and his ability to capture the subtle nuances of the human form. Rendered in soft pencil and watercolor washes, the artist presents two figures bending forward in a manner that emphasizes the natural curves and muscles of the back. The lightness of the pencil marks combined with the delicate watery hues creates a sense of translucency and movement, almost as if the subjects are caught in a gentle, ephemeral dance. The artwork is an exquisite example of Rodin's skill in using drawing as a medium for exploration and expression. It is not merely a preparatory work for his sculptures but a standalone piece that speaks to the themes of naturalism and beauty of the human body that pervade his entire oeuvre.Through this piece, viewers can engage with the intimate and raw beauty Rodin perceived in the human figure, and it remains a poignant reminder of his contribution to both sculptural and drawn art forms.

Rodin was born into a poor family. After earning a living through sculpting decorative stoneworks, he entered art school. He then applied a craftsman-like approach to his work and modeled the human body with the naturalism that latterly became his unique style. Considered as the founder of modern sculpture, Rodin's original works clashed with predominant figurative sculpture from traditional themes of mythology and allegory since he celebrated individual human physicality.
