More about this artwork

Otto Howen's evocative painting, "Pakezels steken een brug over in de Pyrenéén" (Pack Mules Crossing a Bridge in the Pyrenees), captures a moment of rural life set against the dramatic backdrop of the Pyrenees mountains. The artwork illuminates the strenuous yet vital roles these animals play in the rugged terrains of rural Europe. The scene is set on a precariously narrow wooden bridge, where a trio of heavily laden mules, burdened with large packs, carefully navigate the crossing. Their loads are marked with symbols, suggesting commerce or trade, emphasizing their role in the local economy. The figure of a man, presumably the muleteer, guides the animals with a combination of careful watchfulness and ease born of familiarity, illustrating the symbiotic relationship between human and beast. The subtle monochrome palette Howen uses, layered with varying shades of gray and brown, adds to the timeless and somewhat perilous nature of the journey depicted. The detail in the texture of the wooden logs forming the bridge and the rocky cliff sides enhance the visual depth, underlining the isolation and the challenging environment these paths connect. In the distance, the mules that have already crossed blend into the rocky landscape, hinting at the long and perilous trek ahead. This painting not only portrays a specific moment in the Pyrenees but also celebrates the broader theme of endurance and adaptation in the face of natural obstacles.
