More about this artwork

We are delighted to present one of the marvelous works of Franz Anton Maulbertsch, "Die Aufnahme des heiligen Augustinus in den Himmel" (The Ascension of Saint Augustine into Heaven), created between 1785 and 1786. This breathtaking painting is a masterful expression of the Baroque style, characterized by its vibrant energy, dramatic motion, and emotional intensity. The artwork depicts a moment of divine transcendence, as Saint Augustine is welcomed into heaven, surrounded by a host of celestial beings. At the center of the composition, Augustine is lifted toward the heavens, his figure bathed in a divine light that highlights his expression of serene bliss. Above him, the heavenly realm opens up with angels in dynamic poses, their gestures and gazes guiding the viewer's eye through the turbulence of ascent.Maulbertsch's use of color and light enhances the ethereal quality of the scene, with warm golden tones that contrast with the cool blues and grays of the surrounding clouds. The angels are adorned in vivid robes that add a sense of vitality and motion to the canvas. This dynamic arrangement of figures and flowing draperies underscores the spiritual fervor and the mystical experience of Augustine's sanctification."Die Aufnahme des heiligen Augustinus in den Himmel" not only reflects the religious and artistic sensibilities of the 18th century but also offers viewers a moment to reflect on the greater themes of divine grace and the human soul's journey.

Franz Anton Maulbertsch (June 7 , 1724 - August 8 , 1796 ) was, alongside Martin Johann Schmidt , the most outstanding painter of the Austrian late Baroque . His expressive art initially broke with tradition, ultimately culminating in classicism and completing Austrian Baroque painting in an idiosyncratic and independent way.
