More about this artwork
This charming and intimate watercolor by Berthe Morisot, titled "The Artist's Sister, Edma, with Her Daughter, Jeanne," beautifully captures a serene moment between a mother and her child. The painting showcases Morisot's deft and delicate handling of watercolor and her ability to convey tender emotions subtly yet powerfully. In the painting, Edma Pontillon (née Morisot) is depicted seated in an armchair, wearing a light blue dress adorned with small flower motifs, her posture relaxed yet elegant. Her expression is one of peaceful contemplation, possibly watching over her daughter or lost in her own thoughts. Next to Edma, on a red upholstered sofa, sits her daughter Jeanne, who is focused on a book she holds in her little hands. The choice of color and light, and the loose yet confident brushstrokes emphasize the casual and intimate atmosphere of the scene.Morisot's artwork often focused on private, candid moments from her family life, and her portrayals of women and children are especially poignant and reflective of the complexities and nuances of feminine and domestic experiences. This painting, with its soft hues, fluid lines, and emotive subtleties, is a beautiful example of her skill and her thematic focus.

Landscapes and still life by French impressionist painter Berthe Morisot (1841–1895). She was celebrated for the feminine qualities of her paintings, intuitiveness, spontaneity and delicacy, and she often included her daughter Julie in her paintings. Berthe was married to the brother of Édouard Manet, and some say she was his muse, as she modeled in many of his paintings.
