More about this artwork

"Boulevard" by Henri-Edmond Cross is a vibrant painting that captures a seemingly ordinary moment on a bustling city street with a unique, artistic twist. Cross employs his distinctive neo-impressionist style, characterized by loose brushwork and a vivid palette, to breathe life into the urban landscape. The scene is set against a backdrop of muted building facades that fade into a complex network of branches and sky, hinting at the coexistence of nature and urbanity. Dominating the foreground are two horses, each attached to fragments of carts, suggesting the daily grind and movement of city life. The splashes of color on shop windows and posters add a joyful vibrancy, contrasting the overall grey and white hues that suggest a chilly or overcast day. This painting not only depicts a moment in urban life but also reflects Cross’s fascination with color and light, and his ability to transform a mundane city scene into a captivating visual experience.
