More about this artwork

"Majong und Chilly (Hunde) (1930)" is a captivating painting by the renowned German artist Max Beckmann, known for his powerful expressionist style. In this oil on canvas artwork, Beckmann portrays two dogs, each occupying a distinct space yet sharing a moment of rest together. The warm, russet colors enveloping the dog named Majong on the left, as he curls snugly within a red blanket, provide a sharp contrast to the cool blues that define Chilly, the second dog, depicted on a vibrant blue cushion. Majong peacefully sleeps with his face tucked towards his tail, creating a circular form that draws the viewer's gaze into the comfort of his repose. Chilly, with his black and white fur, appears more alert, gazing outwards with noticeable expressiveness. This composition is particularly striking not only for its vibrant color contrasts but also for the keen attention to texture, from the rough basket-weave pattern supporting Majong to the smooth surface under Chilly. Beckmann's expressive brushwork enhances the tactile quality of the scene, making each element pop out with vitality. "Majong und Chilly" is more than a simple portrait of pets; it is a study of tranquility and companionship, rendered passionately through Beckmann's bold use of color and form.

Actors, cabaret singers, heroes and thugs in a harsh postwar urban life by German artist Max Beckmann (1884-1950). His paintings show boldness, lust, and pain through delineated figures. The Nazi rule forced Beckmann to resign as an art professor and declared his artworks as degenerate. He later left for America where he lived in exile, yet remained active as an artist.
