More about this artwork

Welcome to a glimpse into the quiet and contemplative moments of rural Norwegian life, as masterfully captured in Harriet Backer's painting, "Farm Interior, Knabberud in Bærum" (1886). In this evocative oil on canvas, Backer skillfully portrays the simplicity and intimacy of daily life in an old Norwegian farm. The painting features two figures illuminated softly by the natural light flowing through an open window, highlighting the artist's deft use of light and shadow which was characteristic of her work. On the left, an elderly man, dressed in a pale pink shirt and dark waistcoat, sits comfortably in a wooden chair, his arms open in either explanation or conversation. His relaxed posture and facial expression convey a sense of ease and wisdom, perhaps sharing stories or imparting knowledge gathered over many years.Opposite him, a younger man leans earnestly on a cushioned bench, his body turned towards the older man, indicating an attentive and engaged listener. This man, likely a relative or a close friend, is captured in mid-motion, creating a sense of immediacy and involvement. The rustic interior, with its simple wooden furniture and the glimpse of a traditional Norwegian stove in the background, adds to the authenticity and charm of the scene. The soft, natural lighting and the delicate rendering of the textiles, such as the curtains and the bench, demonstrate Backer’s attention to detail and her ability to evoke texture and atmosphere."Farm Interior, Knabberud in Bærum" not only showcases Harriet Backer's remarkable talents but also serves as a window into the past, inviting us to reflect on the quiet moments that connect us through storytelling and shared experiences.

She is best known for her detailed interior scenes, communicated with rich colors and the interplay of light and shadow.
