More about this artwork

Emile Bernard's vibrant painting "Au Cabaret" captures the spirited essence of a 19th-century French cabaret scene with vivid emotion and expressive color. Depicted in this artwork are several figures, each one uniquely contributing to the narrative of nightlife and leisure during that era.At the forefront, we see a group of individuals gathered around a bar. A woman with a bold red dress stands near the center, her posture and expression exuding a certain nonchalance typical of the cabaret's lively atmosphere. Her companion, draped in a multi-hued striped garment, appears mid-gesture, possibly dancing or animatedly interacting with others.Nearby, seated figures engage in conversation, their faces painted with broad, confident strokes that suggest deep involvement in their discussions or perhaps internal contemplation amidst the surrounding revelry. A barman in the background seems almost a guardian of this nightly world, overseeing the scene with a subtle watchfulness.Bernard's use of vigorous, swirling brushstrokes and a daring palette of greens, reds, and yellows not only amplifies the dynamism of the cabaret environment but also highlights his departure from naturalism towards a more symbolic and emotional representation of reality. This painting, with its bold forms and intense colors, invites viewers into a world where the vibrancy of life and the complexity of human emotions are on full display.

Émile Henri Bernard (28 April 1868 – 16 April 1941) was a French Post-Impressionist painter and writer, who had artistic friendships with Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin and Eugène Boch, and at a later time, Paul Cézanne. Most of his notable work was accomplished at a young age, in the years 1886 through 1897. He is also associated with Cloisonnism and Synthetism, two late 19th-century art movements. Less known is Bernard's literary work, comprising plays, poetry, and art criticism as well as art historical statements that contain first-hand information on the crucial period of modern art to which Bernard had contributed.
