More about this artwork

"Explore tranquility and pastoral beauty in Jan Both's 'Italian Landscape with Ferry,' painted around 1652. This exquisite painting captures the serene essence of the Italian countryside during the 17th century. Jan Both, a Dutch Golden Age artist renowned for his masterful landscape paintings, vividly depicts a scene filled with warm, glowing light that seems to bathe the entire landscape. The composition is a visual journey through a peaceful valley flanked by lush, rolling hills. In the foreground, a rustic ferry scene unfolds by a calm river, where figures and animals add life to the pastoral setting. A group of travelers with their horses pause, likely contemplating the crossing or simply taking a moment to enjoy the idyllic surroundings. The delicate reflections on the water's surface, combined with soft cloud-streaked skies and the subtle play of light, evoke a feeling of timeless tranquility. Both ingeniously incorporates elements of daily life into this scenic portrayal, allowing viewers a glimpse into a day long past but remembered through the artist's delicate brush strokes and color palette.

Jan Dirksz Both was a Dutch painter, draughtsman, and etcher, who made an important contribution to the development of Dutch Italianate landscape painting.

Both was born in Utrecht, and was the brother of Andries Both. According to Houbraken, the brothers first learned to paint from their father, who was a glass-painter or glazier there.
