More about this artwork

In this evocative study titled "Study for ‘Madonna and Child’", painted by James Jebusa Shannon around 1892, we observe a tender portrayal of a youthful woman draped in a delicately textured shawl that glistens under a subtle play of light. Shannon’s brushwork skillfully captures the softness of the fabric, as well as the gentle, reflective demeanor of the sitter, inviting viewers to ponder her thoughts and emotions. The woman's gaze is directed slightly downward, suggesting a moment of introspection or perhaps a maternal tenderness, aligning with the theme of ‘Madonna and Child’. Her expression is soft yet distant, evoking a sense of serenity and grace commonly associated with depictions of the Virgin Mary in art history. The muted palette of whites and grays enhances the painting’s timeless and ethereal quality, focusing attention on the play of light and texture over vibrant color.Shannon, known for his portraits and sensitive rendering of his subjects, encourages a connection between the viewer and the figure portrayed. This piece, while a study, stands on its own as a contemplative and beautifully executed work that reflects the artist’s mastery in capturing human emotion and spirituality through the medium of paint.
