More about this artwork

Michael of Belgium (1914)Artist: James Jebusa ShannonDescription: "St. Michael of Belgium" is a compelling work of art by James Jebusa Shannon, painted in 1914. This painting poignantly captures the allegorical figure of Saint Michael, who is traditionally seen as a protector and a warrior saint. In this artwork, the saint is depicted as a solemn yet resolute figure, armored and radiant, standing over a trampled battlefield that suggests the grim realities of war.To the left of Saint Michael stands a soldier, garbed in the uniform reminiscent of a Belgian military outfit from the World War I era. The soldier, bearing his nation's flag, stands firm yet appears solemn, reflecting the pathos and pride intertwined in the acts of defense and sacrifice. The painting's backdrop is a chaotic mix of smoky greys and shadowed earth tones, crafting a somber scene that underscores the poignant themes of conflict and protection. The presence of angelic wings on Saint Michael further elevates the painting’s symbolic resonance, juxtaposing celestial peace with the earthly turmoil depicted below.James Jebusa Shannon's apt use of dynamic strokes and a muted palette evokes a palpable sense of urgency and reverence. This artwork not only captures a historical moment but also transcends it, reflecting on the timeless themes of guardianship, valor, and hope amid despair. "St.
