More about this artwork

Explore the tranquil charm of Eugen Jettel's 1872 masterpiece, "Motiv aus Szered an der Waag". This captivating landscape painting transports viewers to the serene banks of the Váh River, known locally as Waag, in Szered, serenely capturing a moment of rural life. The painting skillfully depicts a broad, calm river stretching across the canvas, flanked by soft sandy shores where everyday life gently unfolds. Jettel's keen eye for detail illuminates various episodes of rural activities. On the left, individuals are seen resting and conversing, enjoying the cool river water on a seemingly warm day. Their relaxed postures and casual interaction evoke a sense of peaceful daily life, far removed from the hustle and bustle of urban settings.Central to the composition, livestock—cows and goats—wade into the shallow waters, drinking and cooling themselves under the watchful eyes of their caretakers. This scene not only adds a bucolic charm but also reflects the harmony between humans and nature typical of rural landscapes.Further enhancing the scene, a group of ducks clusters at the water’s edge, adding a lively touch with their bright white feathers standing out against the darker shoreline. Their presence brings a dynamic contrast to the otherwise tranquil human and bovine figures.Throughout, Jettel's use of light and shadow, combined with a soft palette, captures the unique atmosphere of a warm, sunny day in the countryside. His brushwork expertly conveys the textures of the surroundings—from the smooth surface of the water to the rocky, uneven riverbank, and the rustic architecture of the nearby village.
