More about this artwork

Marsden Hartley's painting "Flowers In A Vase" brings forth a vibrantly expressive bouquet that resonates with the energy and emotional intensity characteristic of his work. The painting features a lush arrangement of flowers, bursting with color, encased in a simple green vase. Set against a contrasting dark backdrop, the flowers include hues of pink, blue, yellow, and white, masterfully applied with bold, impulsive brushstrokes that lend a sense of movement and vitality. The deep reds and pinks of the background serve to highlight the freshness and varied textures of the petals, which seem almost tactile beneath Hartley’s thick application of paint. The composition, while maintaining a clear focus on the bouquet itself, allows glimpses of the table and what might be a pink cloth beneath the vase, adding a grounding element to the blossoms' ethereal presence.Hartley's use of color not only emphasizes the natural beauty of the flowers but also injects a personal, almost intimate quality into the canvas. "Flowers In A Vase" is not merely a depiction of a floral arrangement; it is a poignant expression of the artist's connection to the natural world through color, form, and the sheer joy of painting.

Marsden Hartley (1877–1943) is a Maine native and a leading American Modernist painter, along with his contemporaries, Arthur Dove and Georgia O’Keeffe. He is well-known for employing geometric abstraction as well as bold colors and lines. His paintings depicted imagery of nature, landscapes, figures, and still-life. Sponsored by Alfred Stieglitz, Hartley went to Europe in 1912, spending most of his time in Germany, where he met Gertrude Stein, Wassily Kandinsky, and Franz Marc. After returning to America in 1930, he reconnected with the New England of his childhood and started to portray the landscapes of New England in his paintings.
