More about this artwork

"Running before the Storm. Study from North Norway" by Anna Boberg captures the dynamic and tempestuous nature of the Northern Norwegian landscape with vigorous brushwork and a keen sense of atmospheric tension. Boberg's composition portrays a rugged coastal scene, where the ominous approach of a storm is palpable. Snow-clad surfaces against the rocky terrain are depicted with thick, tactile strokes of white and gray, contrasting sharply with the dark, tumultuous sea.Sailboats with red sails, battling the incoming winds, add a lively yet tense element to the scene, suggesting the urgency often felt by seafarers under threatening skies. The distant mountains enveloped in shades of blue and gray loom in the background, enhancing the feeling of isolation and the formidable power of nature in this remote part of the world. This striking work, alive with movement and a masterful use of color, invites viewers to experience the awe and apprehension associated with Norway's coastal storms—moments when nature's beauty intertwines with its ferocity.

Anna Katarina Boberg (1864 – 1935) was a Swedish artist married to prominent architect Ferdinand Boberg. Boberg was a person of many artistic pursuits; initially she worked with ceramics and textiles and besides painting she also worked with set design and writing. She was of an artistic family, but never received any formal training in the arts, and is considered an autodidact. Many of her paintings are of northern Norway, which became Boberg's main focus for many years after a trip there in 1901. These works were not received very well in Sweden, but did much better in Paris. Boberg spent a great deal of time in the area near Lofoten in Norway, where she eventually had a cabin, and she made many of those trips on her own.
