More about this artwork

Discover the serene beauty of “Winter evening” created by Ľudovít Čordák between 1925 and 1930, a compelling piece that encapsulates the subtle yet poignant expressions of winter landscapes. In this painting, Čordák masterfully captures a tranquil winter scene with delicate, harmonious brushstrokes that convey the chilly essence of the season. The landscape is adorned with soft hues of pink, blue, and gold that reflect the setting sun's rays diffused by the cold winter air.The foreground features a frost-kissed field, where the earth peeks through a thin blanket of snow, rendered in shades of muted peach and subtle lavender. Prominent in the scene are several haystacks, their rounded forms dusted with snow, standing as silent sentinels amidst the chill. A lone, leafless tree, painted with vibrant splashes of red and orange, adds a burst of life and contrast to the otherwise subdued palette, suggesting resilience amid the quietude of winter. The background melds into gentle undulations of distant hills, beneath a sky filled with swirling clouds of green and pink, suggesting the early onset of night and endowing the scene with a dreamlike quality. This painting not only captures the physical attributes of a winter evening but also evokes the reflective calm and subdued anticipation of the night drawing near.Ľudovít Čordák’s “Winter evening” invites viewers to pause and marvel at the quiet beauty of nature's stillness, wrapped in the cool embrace of winter's touch.

He studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts 1872–1875, then, in 1878, moved to Paris where he became strongly associated with Orientalism.
