More about this artwork

Capturing the majestic and raw beauty of one of nature's most formidable wonders, John Frederick Kensett's "View of Niagara Falls" offers viewers a splendid panorama of this iconic landmark. Painted around 1851-1852, Kensett's composition masterfully depicts the cascading waters and their powerful surge as they tumble into the river below. The painting places the viewer on the riverbank, among rugged rocks and rich, autumn-tinted foliage, providing a vantage point that is both intimate and awe-inspiring. The turbulent waters of the Niagara River dominate the foreground, their cool, frothy blues and greens contrasting with the warm earth tones of the rocks and trees. Balancing the scene, the Falls themselves are portrayed in sweeping, misty whites, their immense scale emphasized by the sheer cliffs and the delicate spray that hangs in the air.Kensett, known for his luminist approach, skillfully uses light to enhance the atmospheric effects and the sensation of vast, open space. The soft, diffuse light infuses the scene with a tranquility that belies the inherent force and roar of the falling water.

John Frederick Kensett was an American landscape painter and engraver born in Cheshire, Connecticut. A member of the second generation of the Hudson River School of artists, Kensett's signature works are landscape paintings of New England and New York State, whose clear light and serene surfaces celebrate transcendental qualities of nature, and are associated with Luminism. Kensett's early work owed much to the influence of Thomas Cole, but was from the outset distinguished by a preference for cooler colors and an interest in less dramatic topography, favoring restraint in both palette and composition.
