More about this artwork

Featured in our latest gallery exhibition is the quietly evocative painting "Old boat" by the renowned artist Petrus van der Velden. This artwork captures a solitary, weathered boat resting on a calm shore, offering viewers a glimpse into themes of neglect and the passage of time. The composition of "Old boat" is a testament to van der Velden's masterful handling of subtle colors and detailed textures. The faded blue and white hues of the boat contrast strikingly against the soft background, suggesting a sense of forgotten stories and past voyages. The craft shows signs of wear and disrepair, with peeling paintwork and distorted wood planks, highlighting the boat’s abandonment.Van der Velden's choice to depict the boat in isolation invites contemplation on resilience and solitude. The delicate rendering of light and shadow on the boat's surface enhances the overall melancholic yet peaceful atmosphere of the scene. This painting is not only a visual study but also a poignant reminder of the beauty and poignancy that can be found in the often overlooked corners of the world.

Petrus van der Velden, who is also known as Paulus van der Velden, was a Dutch artist who spent much of his later career in New Zealand.

Petrus van der Velden was born in Rotterdam; his parents were Jacoba van Essel and Joannes van der Velden, a warehouse manager. Petrus began drawing lessons at around the age of 13 and subsequently apprenticed as a lithographer. In 1858 he founded a lithographic printing company in Rotterdam with business partner J. G. Zijderman.
