More about this artwork

Anton Mauve's watercolor painting titled "A Herdess with Cows on a Country Road in the Rain," created between 1848 and 1888, captures the quintessence of rural life in the Netherlands during the 19th century. This evocative work depicts a lone herdswoman navigating a muddy country road under a relentless rain, shepherding her group of cows. The herdswoman, cloaked and sheltered beneath an umbrella, appears as an embodiment of resilience and calm amidst the dreariness and challenge presented by the weather.Mauve's expertise in atmospheric effects and his sensitive portrayal of both humans and animals shine brightly in this painting. The subdued palette dominated by greys and soft earth tones enhances the feeling of wetness and the chill of the rain-soaked landscape. The positioning of the figures and the perspective of the road leading into the horizon not only draw the viewer’s eye deep into the scene but also reflect the ongoing, enduring nature of the herdswoman’s task. This piece is an exemplary showcase of Mauve's skill in capturing the mood and moment, blending the elements of nature with the daily toils of pastoral life, making it a poignant reflection on human interaction with the natural world.

Anthonij "Anton" Rudolf Mauve (18 September 1838 – 5 February 1888) was a Dutch realist painter who was a leading member of the Hague School. He signed his paintings 'A. Mauve' or with a monogrammed 'A.M.'. A master colorist, he was a very significant early influence on his cousin-in-law Vincent van Gogh.

His best-known paintings depict peasants working in the fields. His paintings of flocks of sheep were especially popular with American patrons, so popular that a price differential developed between scenes of "sheep coming" and "sheep going".
