More about this artwork

"De melkbocht" (The Milk Turn), a serene and pastoral painting by the Dutch artist Anton Mauve, wonderfully captures the tranquil essence of rural life during the late 19th century. In this evocative landscape, Mauve employs soft, natural colors to illustrate a pastoral scene dominated by gentle livestock and a vast, open sky.At the forefront of the painting, two cows stand close to a rustic wooden fence, one gazing directly at the viewer with an almost personable curiosity, while the other, slightly in the background, grazes peacefully. A farmhand, leaning against the fence, appears to be overseeing the cattle, his blue attire subtly injecting a splash of color into the predominantly earthy tones of the scene. The background is an exquisite portrayal of expansive meadows under a broad sky, suggesting the endless routine of nature and farming life. Mauve’s skilled brushwork in the leaves of a slender tree adds a textural contrast to the smoothness of the sky, inviting the viewer to appreciate the interplay of light and texture."De melkbocht" is not just a visual study of livestock and landscape; it is also an insight into the harmonious relationship between man and nature, a recurring theme in Mauve's work.

Anthonij "Anton" Rudolf Mauve (18 September 1838 – 5 February 1888) was a Dutch realist painter who was a leading member of the Hague School. He signed his paintings 'A. Mauve' or with a monogrammed 'A.M.'. A master colorist, he was a very significant early influence on his cousin-in-law Vincent van Gogh.

His best-known paintings depict peasants working in the fields. His paintings of flocks of sheep were especially popular with American patrons, so popular that a price differential developed between scenes of "sheep coming" and "sheep going".
