More about this artwork

Lucas Cranach the Elder’s painting "The Fountain of Youth" is an evocative work filled with allegorical imagery, capturing a fantastical interpretation of the quest for eternal youth. In this detailed scene, Cranach illustrates a series of events centered around a magical fountain. The central area of the painting features a large, geometric pool, quadrilateral in shape, filled with clear, inviting water. In and around this pool, elderly women are being assisted by attendants to enter the water. These women appear frail and aged as they approach, but once they immerse themselves in the miraculous waters, they emerge on the other side of the pool rejuvenated, transformed into young and beautiful figures. To the left of the painting, Cranach depicts the process of these elderly women arriving in carts or being supported as they walk towards the fountain, symbolizing their last hope for regaining youth. On the right side of the scene, the now youthful women engage in lively activities. They dress in fine clothes and interact in what seems to be a lively courtly gathering, complete with music and dancing, symbolizing their reintegration into society as young individuals. The setting includes idyllic landscapes with distant mountains and lush greenery, enhancing the utopian feel of the narrative.
