More about this artwork

"A Milkmaid" is a captivating sketch created by Aelbert Cuyp during the period between 1642 and 1646. This artwork skillfully captures the essence of everyday rural life through its portrayal of a young milkmaid at work. The milkmaid is depicted sitting on the ground, her focus intense as she handles what appears to be a textile or tool associated with her daily tasks. Her attire is simple yet detailed, adorned with a broad-brimmed hat that shadows her face, which bears a look of concentration. The delicate and precise strokes used by Cuyp bring a softness to the fabric of her clothes, emphasizing the texture and folds with great skill. This drawing not only showcases Cuyp’s mastery over the medium but also provides a glimpse into 17th-century pastoral life, highlighting the unassuming yet pivotal roles played by workers such as milkmaids.
