More about this artwork

We are delighted to showcase "Pink Begonias," a captivating oil painting by American Modernist Marsden Hartley. Created during the years 1928-1929, this artwork is a splendid representation of Hartley's unique ability to blend the abstract with the representational in his depictions of the natural world. In "Pink Begonias," the viewer is treated to a vivid display of a single begonia flower positioned boldly at the center. The flower itself bursts with shades of bright pink and subtle hints of yellow at its heart, creating a striking contrast with the lush, dark green foliage that frames it. Each petal of the begonia is rendered with thick, expressive brushstrokes, emphasizing the dynamic and almost sculptural quality of Hartley's painting style. The background of blush-toned pink enhances the floral subject, enlivening the painting with a warm, radiant glow that seemingly projects the bloom forward. This use of color not only highlights the begonia but also adds emotional depth to the piece, suggesting the artist's admiration for the simple, yet profound beauty of the natural world."Pink Begonias" exemplifies Hartley's mastery in using color and form to convey feeling and emotion, making it a celebrated work in his floral series. This painting invites viewers to pause and appreciate the unexpected beauty found in everyday blossoms, transformed through the artist's bold and emotive lens.

Marsden Hartley (1877–1943) is a Maine native and a leading American Modernist painter, along with his contemporaries, Arthur Dove and Georgia O’Keeffe. He is well-known for employing geometric abstraction as well as bold colors and lines. His paintings depicted imagery of nature, landscapes, figures, and still-life. Sponsored by Alfred Stieglitz, Hartley went to Europe in 1912, spending most of his time in Germany, where he met Gertrude Stein, Wassily Kandinsky, and Franz Marc. After returning to America in 1930, he reconnected with the New England of his childhood and started to portray the landscapes of New England in his paintings.
