More about this artwork

"Standard Bearer" is a compelling graphite drawing by the artist Petrus van der Velden, showcasing his mastery in portraying human figures with deep expression and authenticity. The artwork captures a rugged, bearded man draped in a simple, loose-fitting garment, standing with solemn dignity. His attire includes a wide-brimmed hat, possibly signaling his rank or role, further emphasized by the large, flowing flag he holds beside him, which drapes elegantly from a tall staff. The man's gaze is directed slightly upwards, possibly indicating contemplation or resolve, suggesting he may be preparing for a significant event or reflecting on a past battle. The drawing, executed with delicate shading and attentive detail, reveals not just the physical attributes of the standard bearer, but also hints at a story behind the person he portrays. Van der Velden's skillful hand lends a texture and depth to the fabric of the clothes and flag, adding a tactile sense to the visual experience. This piece likely delves into themes of duty, leadership, and the burdens borne by those who lead. "Standard Bearer" does more than depict a figure; it invites viewers to ponder the personal histories and solemn responsibilities of those anointed as symbols or leaders in their communities.

Petrus van der Velden, who is also known as Paulus van der Velden, was a Dutch artist who spent much of his later career in New Zealand.

Petrus van der Velden was born in Rotterdam; his parents were Jacoba van Essel and Joannes van der Velden, a warehouse manager. Petrus began drawing lessons at around the age of 13 and subsequently apprenticed as a lithographer. In 1858 he founded a lithographic printing company in Rotterdam with business partner J. G. Zijderman.
