More about this artwork

Martinus Rørbye's 1835 masterpiece, "To italienske hyrdedrenge siddende ved ilden" (Two Italian Shepherd Boys Sitting by the Fire), provides a captivating glimpse into the rustic life of Italian shepherds. This finely detailed painting brings viewers into the serene setting of the Italian countryside, under the subtle gaze of a distant mountain backdrop. The serene landscape is enhanced by the soft hues and detailed representation of pastoral life, characteristic of Rørbye's observational style. In the foreground, two young shepherds are depicted in a moment of respite by a small campfire. Their attire, consisting of wide-brimmed hats and layered, functional clothing, speaks volumes about their lifestyle and daily challenges. The shepherd on the left, engaged in playing a simple woodwind instrument, wears a coat with a lambskin lining, which adds authenticity to his character. His companion, seated comfortably on a rock, captivates the viewer with his direct gaze, creating a connection that transcends time and space.Accompanied by a sheepdog and surrounded by a flock in the background, the scene is animated yet peaceful. A small stream of smoke from the fire adds a tactile sense to this bucolic setting, enhancing the painting's overall atmosphere."To italienske hyrdedrenge siddende ved ilden" not only showcases Rørbye's skill in capturing everyday moments but also reflects his deep appreciation for the natural surroundings and the simple way of life of common folk.

Martinus Christian Wesseltoft Rørbye was a Danish painter, known both for genre works and landscapes. He was a central figure of the Golden Age of Danish painting during the first half of the 19th century.

The most traveled of the Danish Golden Age painters, he traveled both north to Norway and Sweden and south to Italy, Greece and Constantinople. He was also the first Danish painter to take to painting in Skagen at the northern top of Jutland, almost half a century before the thriving community of Skagen Painters formed and came to fame, through Michael Ancher, Anna Ancher and P.S. Krøyer.
