More about this artwork

"Spinett und Lehnstuhl" (1912) by Ernst Stern is an exquisite portrayal of a beautiful and intricately designed spinet and an elegant upholstered chair that complement each other in their classical allure. The painting captures a delightful vintage setting, which seems both inviting and reflective of a bygone era.The spinet, an early keyboard instrument, is intricately adorned and partially open to display its strings, suggesting an invitation to play or a pause in a musical soiree. The detailed illustration captures the ornate wood carvings of the spinet's legs and its ornamental music holder, showcasing an image of what appears to be a classical scene, marking the cultural richness linked with such an instrument.Adjacent to the spinet is a stately armchair, richly upholstered and accented with a plush cushion and elegant trimmings. The chair, standing expectant and vacant, evokes a sense of waiting—perhaps for a musician or a lover of music to bring the silent scene to life. Its formal design contrasts with the functional simplicity of the spinet, creating a striking harmony within the frame. This artwork by Ernst Stern not only highlights the beauty of musical instruments and furniture from a seasoned era but also invites viewers to ponder the stories and melodies they might have once been a part of.

Ernst Stern (1 April 1876 – 28 August 1954) was a Romanian-German scenic designer who, through his collaborations with most of the prominent German directors of the early 20th century, helped define the aesthetic of expressionism in both the theatre and the cinema.
