More about this artwork

"Landschap met molen bij maanlicht" by Jacob Maris captures a serene nighttime scene steeped in a soft melancholic mood, typical of the Dutch landscapes. Created sometime between 1847 and 1899, this watercolor painting features a moonlit landscape, portraying the tranquility and subtle interplay of light and shadow that night brings to the natural world. In the painting, a windmill stands as the focal point, softly outlined against the cloudy, dynamic sky where the moon peeks through, casting a silvery light over the scene. Near the base of the windmill, a figure can be seen, adding a human element and scale to the idyllic setting. The presence of the figure, possibly a miller or a passerby, serves to connect the viewer with the everyday life that continues even under the cloak of night. The reflective water enhances the painting's moody atmosphere, mirroring the subtle glow of the moon and the whispers of the night sky. Maris’s skillful use of muted tones and controlled brushstrokes conveys not just a scene, but an emotion - a quiet moment of solitude and contemplative peace.
