More about this artwork

Dive into the serene pastoral beauty of Jacob Maris's "Landschap in de omgeving van Den Haag," a captivating oil painting completed in 1891. This artwork offers viewers a glimpse into the tranquil landscapes surrounding The Hague, portraying a timeless piece of the Dutch countryside. In this evocative scene, Maris masterfully uses subdued, earthy tones to depict a quiet waterway reflecting a cloudy sky. The landscape is dotted with rustic buildings and sparse vegetation, creating a sense of peaceful isolation. The artist's skillful brushwork enhances the textural quality of the grassy banks and the rough surfaces of the wooden fences, inviting the viewer to feel the cool, damp air.A sole figure in blue, seemingly absorbed in their tasks near the water's edge, adds a human touch to the composition, suggesting the everyday life of the rural inhabitants. Above, birds glide gracefully, further animating the scene and heightening the overall atmosphere of calm and quietude.Jacob Maris's work is celebrated for his ability to capture the moody essence of the Dutch landscape, and "Landschap in de omgeving van Den Haag" is a prime example of his talent. This painting not only showcases the natural beauty of the Netherlands but also evokes a sense of nostalgia for a simpler, bucolic life away from the bustling city centers.

Stroebel who taught him the art of painting from 1849 to 1852.
