More about this artwork

August Macke, a master of color and form, transports us to a serene, almost idyllic, scene with his painting "Garten in Tegernsee mit Haus und Berg" (Garden in Tegernsee with House and Mountain), created in 1910. At first glance, this artwork pulls the viewer into a lush garden scene set against the backdrop of the majestic Tegernsee landscape. In the foreground, a vibrant tapestry of green tones creates a lively variety of bushes and trees, punctuated by splashes of red and white blooms that suggest a garden lovingly tended. The inclusion of a rustic fence, painted with strokes of pink and purple, adds a charming boundary to the garden, hinting at the human care that shapes this natural paradise.Beyond the immediate garden, the painting reveals a broader vista. A house peeks through the greenery, suggesting a dwelling embraced by nature, while the softly undulating hills lead the viewer's eye to the central mountain peak in the distance. This peak, rendered in gentle blue and grey hues, stands as a calm sentinel overlooking the scene.August Macke's use of expressive colors and fluid brushstrokes encapsulates a moment of tranquility and the beauty of the natural world, making "Garten in Tegernsee mit Haus und Berg" a captivating study of harmony between humanity and nature.

August Macke (3 January 1887 – 26 September 1914) was a German Expressionist painter. He was one of the leading members of the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider). He lived during a particularly innovative time for German art: he saw the development of the main German Expressionist movements as well as the arrival of the successive avant-garde movements which were forming in the rest of Europe. Like a true artist of his time, Macke knew how to integrate into his painting the elements of the avant-garde which most interested him.
