More about this artwork

Rosa Bonheur's evocative painting, titled "Charcoal Burners" (Les charbonniers), dating from the 1880s to 1890s, masterfully captures the rugged essence of labor and the ethereal beauty of nature. In this atmospheric scene, Bonheur depicts two charcoal burners immersed in their toil amidst a dense wooded landscape shrouded in swirls of smoke and mist. The painting's dramatic chiaroscuro, with its deep monochromatic shades, brings to life the laborious process of producing charcoal, an essential fuel source in the 19th century. The figures are shown managing large piles of smoldering wood, one prominently in the foreground, vigorously stirring the earth, while the other, slightly obscured by the thick smoke, works diligently in the background. This dynamic interaction highlights the physical exertion and skill involved in charcoal burning - a craft both arduous and perilous.Bonheur’s keen attention to detail not only narrates a story of hard labor but also speaks of her profound respect and admiration for those who toil in harmony with the natural world. The enveloping smoke subtly blends with the clouds above, suggesting a seamless integration of man's endeavor with the forces of nature.

Rosa Bonheur, born Marie-Rosalie Bonheur, was a French artist, mostly a painter of animals (animalière) but also a sculptor, in a realist style. Her paintings include Ploughing in the Nivernais, first exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1848, and now at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, and The Horse Fair (in French: Le marché aux chevaux), which was exhibited at the Salon of 1853 (finished in 1855) and is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York City. Bonheur was widely considered to be the most famous female painter of the nineteenth century.
