More about this artwork

Jean François Raffaëlli's captivating painting, "The Quai Malaquais, Paris," masterfully captures a lively and busy boulevard flanked by the elegant facades of Paris' historical architecture. The scene is set against a backdrop of soft winter light that bathes the city in a warm, gentle glow, suggestive of a late afternoon. This artwork offers a snapshot of Parisian life in what appears to be the fall or early winter, as evidenced by the bare trees which line the promenade, sprinkled with a few lingering autumn leaves.Central to the composition is the bustling quay filled with a diverse group of people: pedestrians dressed in coats and hats of the period, a man on horseback, and figures that seem engaged in their daily routines. The presence of a horse-drawn carriage adds to the dynamism of the scene. In the foreground, a figure with a basket and a small dog beside him provides a focal point, emphasizing the everyday human element amidst the grandeur of the city's architecture.Raffaëlli's brushwork is loose and expressive, contributing to a sense of movement and vibrancy. His palette is predominantly made up of muted earth tones punctuated by touches of reds and blues on the garments of the city dwellers, bringing a zest of color that draws the viewer’s eye along the canvas.Overall, "The Quai Malaquais, Paris" is not just a visual delight; it is a portal to a bygone era of Paris seen through the lens of Raffaëlli's distinctive impressionistic style.

Jean-François Raffaëlli was a French realist painter, sculptor, and printmaker who exhibited with the Impressionists. He was also active as an actor and writer.

Born in Paris, he was of Tuscan descent through his paternal grandparents. He showed an interest in music and theatre before becoming a painter in 1870. One of his landscape paintings was accepted for exhibition at the Salon in that same year.
