More about this artwork

We are delighted to present a stunning piece from our collection: "Notre Dame Seen from the Quai de la Tournelle," an exquisite painting by Jean François Raffaëlli, created around 1897-1902. This remarkable work captures the scenic and vibrant atmosphere of Paris during the turn of the century.Raffaëlli's mastery is evident in his depiction of Notre Dame Cathedral, rising majestically in the background. The cathedral’s intricate Gothic architecture, including its towering spires and flying buttresses, is rendered with delicate brushstrokes, conveying both the grandeur and the intricate details of this historic edifice. In the foreground, life along the Seine bustles with a sense of everyday elegance. Figures are scattered across the quay, each rendered in a style that suggests both movement and the brevity of the moment. A woman in a flowing dress walks leisurely, accompanied by a child and followed by a dog, suggesting a serene moment in their day. Other passersby and onlookers contribute to the dynamic and lively scene, hinting at the vibrancy of Parisian life. The Quai de la Tournelle itself, with its wide promenade leading the eye towards the distant bridge and river, showcases Raffaëlli’s ability to create depth and perspective. The soft, diffused light of the sky contrasts with the detailed, textured rendering of the city and its inhabitants, adding a dreamlike quality to the scene.

Jean-François Raffaëlli was a French realist painter, sculptor, and printmaker who exhibited with the Impressionists. He was also active as an actor and writer.

Born in Paris, he was of Tuscan descent through his paternal grandparents. He showed an interest in music and theatre before becoming a painter in 1870. One of his landscape paintings was accepted for exhibition at the Salon in that same year.
