More about this artwork

Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo's mid-18th to early 19th-century ink drawing, *, captures the majesty and calm demeanor of a lion at rest. This artwork showcases Tiepolo's mastery of ink as a medium, emphasizing fluid yet precise strokes that convey the texture of the lion's mane and the muscularity of its form.At a glance, the lion is depicted in a serene pose, lying with its head turned towards the right, suggesting a moment of repose in a natural setting that may be evocative of the lion's contemplative state or simply a naturalistic portrayal of its daily life. The lion, with its detailed and layered mane, exhibits both power and tranquility, embodying the dual nature often associated with this majestic creature. The base on which the lion lies adds a sculptural element to the piece, perhaps hinting at the importance of this animal in both artistic and cultural contexts during Tiepolo's time. The shadowing and textural details provided by the ink not only illustrate the lion's physical attributes but also enhance its dimensional and grounded presence on the paper.Tiepolo’s work exemplifies the skill of using minimal color and detail to portray a vivid and dynamic subject.
