More about this artwork

"Carved Mahogany China Cases," created by artist Edwin Foley between 1910 and 1911, is a striking painting that captures the elegance and intricate design of period furniture. The artwork showcases a beautifully detailed mahogany china cabinet, set against a backdrop indicative of a refined interior from the early 20th century.Positioned prominently in the composition, the china cabinet features elaborate carvings adorned with classical motifs. Its architecture includes a grand cornice decorated with scrolls and foliage patterns, flanked by pilasters and a base with similarly detailed craftsmanship. The glass doors of the cabinet reveal multiple shelves, each staged with figures engaging in various social and leisure activities, rendered in a style that suggests they are delicate porcelain figurines. The ambiance is further enhanced by the interior decoration elements visible in the surroundings—elegant wall moldings and two wall-mounted candelabra sconces, which resonate with the period's taste for ornate and sophisticated home décor. This painting not only highlights Edwin Foley's meticulous attention to detail and his appreciation for antique woodwork but also encapsulates the aesthetic preferences of an era that valued ornamental richness and domestic grandeur.
