Repose

On our current exhibition, we are proud to present "Repose," a captivating painting by the esteemed 19th-century African-American artist, Edward Mitchell Bannister. In this work, Bannister captures a tranquil moment in natural surroundings, appreciating a serene slice of daily life often overlooked."Repose" depicts two figures—a seated man and a standing woman—engaging in a quiet pause in what appears to be a rural setting. The man, reclining comfortably against a backdrop of dense, subtly colored landscape, gazes leisurely at the ground, evoking a sense of deep thought or contemplation. Standing next to him, the woman dressed in a vibrant blue skirt and a yellow blouse, looks outward with hands clasped together, suggesting a moment of peaceful reflection or patient waiting.
