More about this artwork

This painting, titled "Lillie," by Frederick Childe Hassam, beautifully captures a young woman in an intimate, reflective pose. The woman is dressed in a delicate, pastel blue gown with significant frills and lace detailing, suggesting a setting of leisure and finery. The setting and her attire might suggest a period around the late 19th or early 20th century, consistent with Hassam's body of work. She is seated on what appears to be a plush sofa, with a yellow and gold throw adding warmth to the scene. The background features a pink and golden striped wall, enhancing the richness of the overall composition. Lillie holds a yellow flower to her nose, perhaps a daffodil, drawing attention with a gentle yet thoughtful gesture. This action imparts a sense of serenity and contemplation.Hassam's use of light and color heightens the emotive quality of the painting. The brushwork is loose and impressionistic, a signature style of Hassam, giving a sense of immediacy and vibrancy to the image. The varied textures from the soft lace of her dress to the shimmering wall suggest a moment captured in both time and emotion.Overall, "Lillie" is a sophisticated and tender depiction of a young woman in a moment of private contemplation, rendered with the sensitivity and skill typical of Hassam's impressionistic style.
