More about this artwork

"Les Petits Joyeux" is a captivating artwork by Théophile Alexandre Steinlen, created in 1891. This piece offers a vivid glimpse into the spirited ambience of late 19th-century Paris. At first glance, we see a group of lively youths making their way through a narrow city alley, suggesting a sense of camaraderie and youthful exuberance. The setting is accentuated by the dusky hues and soft shadows that evoke the evening time, a likely hint at the end of a day’s toil or the beginning of nocturnal festivities. What is particularly striking about this painting is the overlay of music sheet, featuring what appears to be a popular song of the era. This inclusion not only emphasizes the cultural context of the period but also connects the viewer directly to the historical ambiance Steinlen aims to portray. The playful interaction among the group, their casual attire, and carefree posture collectively narrate a tale of friendship and leisure typical to the bohemian lifestyle prevalent among the Parisian youth of the time.Steinlen’s use of soft, sketch-like lines and muted color palette further brings out the fleeting, ephemeral moments of everyday life. These artistic choices underscore the transient joys of youth, captured here in a spontaneous, almost candid manner.

Théophile Alexandre Steinlen, was a Swiss-born French Art Nouveau painter and printmaker.

Born in Lausanne, Steinlen studied at the University of Lausanne before taking a job as a designer trainee at a textile mill in Mulhouse in eastern France. In his early twenties he was still developing his skills as a painter when he and his wife Emilie were encouraged by the painter François Bocion to move to the artistic community in the Montmartre Quarter of Paris. Once there, Steinlen was befriended by the painter Adolphe Willette who introduced him to the artistic crowd at Le Chat Noir that led to his commissions to do poster art for the cabaret owner/entertainer, Aristide Bruant and other commercial enterprises.
