Captured in rich, dark tones with splashes of vivid hues, this painting encapsulates the essence of popular public festivities. The scene is set outdoors under a canopy of light and color, with French flags and decorative globes hanging aloft, playing hosts to a jubilant crowd. The artwork teems with a plethora of characters, each portrayed in mid-movement, contributing to a lively atmosphere that seems to bustle off the canvas. In the foreground, groups of people, some seated at tables, engage in animated conversation, their faces expressing joy and enthusiasm. Elegantly dressed women and men in various attire, including caps and bonnets, reflect the social mix of the event. The brushwork is loose and expressive, which effectively conveys the dynamic energy and the clamorous ambiance of the celebration.Viewers are invited not only to observe a moment in history but also to feel the collective emotion and camaraderie that characterizes public gatherings on such a patriotic day. Théophile Alexandre Steinlen, was a Swiss-born French Art Nouveau painter and printmaker.

Born in Lausanne, Steinlen studied at the University of Lausanne before taking a job as a designer trainee at a textile mill in Mulhouse in eastern France. In his early twenties he was still developing his skills as a painter when he and his wife Emilie were encouraged by the painter François Bocion to move to the artistic community in the Montmartre Quarter of Paris. Once there, Steinlen was befriended by the painter Adolphe Willette who introduced him to the artistic crowd at Le Chat Noir that led to his commissions to do poster art for the cabaret owner/entertainer, Aristide Bruant and other commercial enterprises.
