More about this artwork

Welcome to the enchanting world of Gustav Klimt, where art transcends the canvas to evoke both beauty and profound introspection. "Woman with Fan," painted between 1917-1918, stands as a testament to Klimt's mature style, characterized by ornamental richness and complex symbolism. This painting captures the portrait of a sophisticated lady, her gaze distant yet inviting, surrounded by a riot of color and pattern that is quintessentially Klimt. The woman, elegantly poised, holds a fan—a common motif in Klimt's works that adds an exotic flair and suggests a narrative of delicacy and concealment. The fan, adorned vibrantly, contrasts with her dark, flowing hair and the subtle grace of her posture. The backdrop is a mesmerizing tapestry of gold, infused with symbolic imagery of Eastern influence. Floral motifs and peacock feathers—a symbol of immortality and beauty—dominate the scene, creating a splendid harmony of nature and human sophistication. The luxurious use of gold leaf and the intricate details surrounding the figure reflect Klimt’s interest in Byzantine mosaics, which he famously adapted to his own iconic aesthetic. In "Woman with Fan," Klimt not only captures the external beauty of his subject but also evokes a deeper sense of personality and mood, allowing viewers to wander into a world of aesthetic pleasure and thoughtful contemplation.

Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) was one of the greatest Austrian symbolist painters of the Art Nouveau era. Renowned as one of the most prominent founding members, and as a president of the Vienna Art Nouveau movement (Vienna Secession). His works were mainly paintings, murals, and sketches. Marked by his numerous erotic drawings, Klimt's primary subject were female figures, and at one point his work was even criticized as pornographic. Klimt found financial success in his "Golden Phase" with decorative techniques and the prominent use of gold leaf in his paintings.
