More about this artwork

"Save Serbia our ally" is a compelling and emotive work by the renowned Swiss-French artist Théophile Alexandre Steinlen, created in 1918. This painting draws the viewer into a vivid tableau of Serbian soldiers and civilians bound together by the dire circumstances of World War I. The artwork portrays a mix of determination and somber resilience on the faces of these figures, capturing a moment of collective resolve and national unity. The central figure, a soldier, stands solemnly with a rifle slung over his shoulder, gazing directly at the viewer. His bearing and direct stare evoke a sense of immediate connection, serving as a poignant appeal for aid. Surrounding him, the faces of men and a woman reflect a spectrum of emotions, from weariness to an underlying defiance, representing the broader struggle of the Serbian people during the conflict.Rendered with a rich palette of earthy tones and dark shadows, the image highlights Steinlen's skill in using color and contrast to evoke mood and focus attention. The leafy branches that hang above the group perhaps symbolize hope and the endurance of the human spirit amidst adversity. This image originally served not only as a piece of art but also as a poster, making a public plea for assistance from the American people in support of Serbia. The text "Save Serbia our ally" is prominently displayed at the bottom, reinforcing the message of solidarity and urging viewers to contribute to the Serbian Relief Committee of America.

Théophile Alexandre Steinlen, was a Swiss-born French Art Nouveau painter and printmaker.

Born in Lausanne, Steinlen studied at the University of Lausanne before taking a job as a designer trainee at a textile mill in Mulhouse in eastern France. In his early twenties he was still developing his skills as a painter when he and his wife Emilie were encouraged by the painter François Bocion to move to the artistic community in the Montmartre Quarter of Paris. Once there, Steinlen was befriended by the painter Adolphe Willette who introduced him to the artistic crowd at Le Chat Noir that led to his commissions to do poster art for the cabaret owner/entertainer, Aristide Bruant and other commercial enterprises.
