More about this artwork

"Le Bateau De Sel" (The Salt Boat) by Henri Le Sidaner is a captivating 1919 painting that invites viewers into a serene, enchanting setting by the water's edge. This artwork shows Le Sidaner’s soft and subtle use of color to conjure mood and atmosphere. In the painting, a boat is moored on the still waters of a canal, which reflects the vivid hues of the sky and surrounding vegetation. The boat, positioned centrally at the bottom half of the composition, draws the viewer’s eye as a focal point with its darker tones against the lighter water. Above and around the boat, a riot of autumnal colors is rendered in a dappled technique, with the trees illuminated by hints of sunlight filtering through branches, casting a mosaic of shadows and light on the ground and water surface. To the right, aligned with the canal, stand rows of trees and behind them, quaint houses painted in hushed tones, contributing to the painting's peaceful ambiance. The leaves are depicted in myriad colors, suggesting the season of fall, a time often associated with reflection and tranquility.Henri Le Sidaner was known for his intimiste style, capturing quiet, almost private moments in settings devoid of human figures, yet brimming with human presence and emotion. "Le Bateau De Sel" perfectly exemplifies this style, with its subtle play of light and texture inviting contemplation and offering a visual retreat into nature’s quiet beauty.

Henri Eugène Augustin Le Sidaner (7 August 1862 – 14 July 1939) who was a contemporary of the Post-impressionists, was an intimist painter known for his paintings of domestic interiors and quiet street scenes. His style contained elements of impressionism with the influences of Édouard Manet, Monet and of the Pointillists discernible in his work. Le Sidaner favoured a subdued use of colour, preferring nuanced greys and opals applied with uneven, dappled brushstrokes to create atmosphere and mysticism. A skilled nocturne painter, he travelled widely throughout France and Europe before settling at Gerberoy in the Picardy countryside from where he painted for over thirty years.

Le Sidaner's paintings and pastels were widely collected throughout his career. His seductive views of the gardens he created in the ruins of the medieval fortress at Gerberoy, with their recently vacated tables dappled in sunlight and overhung by roses, have cemented his reputation as a unique artist who does not fit easily into an art movement.
