More about this artwork

Delve into the introspective gaze captured in Pierre Bonnard's "Portrait de Jeune Femme Or Le Chapeau" from circa 1905, a captivating artwork that beautifully demonstrates the artist's unique application of color and light, and his interaction with post-impressionist aesthetics. The painting portrays a young woman, her expression pensive and almost wistful, further emphasized by the soft, yet complex brushstrokes creating an almost dream-like ambiance around her.Her outfit is distinctly striking, illustrating Bonnard's keen attention to detail and texture. She wears a fashionable hat adorned with dark and golden tones, creating a striking contrast against her flushed cheeks and perturbed gaze. The hat, an ostentatious piece expands above her brow, drawing the viewer's focus to her eyes, which are wide and contemplative. Her dress, decorated with delicate floral accents and frilled with lace, adds an element of tender femininity that Bonnard manages to convey with his characteristically light and fragmented brushstrokes. This painting not only represents a young woman in an everyday setting but also reflects the artist’s ongoing fascination with the intimate moments of domestic life.

Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) was a French post-impressionist painter, printmaker, and the leader of the Intimist art movement. He is regarded as one of the greatest colourists of modern art. Together with other young artists in Montmarte, Bonnard co-founded the group known as Les Nabis, translated from the arabic word “prophet”. He was known for a painting style that was very intimate, featuring friends in a garden, nudes, interiors and sunlit objects of everyday life. He began by painting in watercolor, composing scenes and deeply familiarizing himself with the subject, before transferring the composition to canvas. In many of his paintings, his mistress Marthe was the main subject. She was his most important model and was often pictured nude, after 30 years they finally married.
