More about this artwork

"Partridge Shooting" is a captivating landscape painting by George Morland, an artist renowned for his detailed depictions of English country life. This oil on canvas portrays a serene yet vibrant scene of a hunting expedition. At the forefront, we see a rider dressed in a striking red hunting coat atop a poised brown horse, evidently taking a moment to scout the terrain with his rifle ready. Accompanying him is a gentleman on foot, clad in more subtle attire, handling two impressive white horses that seem to be carrying additional supplies or game. The composition is enlivened by the presence of hunting dogs, mid-action, adding a sense of movement and excitement to the hunt. They meticulously scan the underbrush, illustrating their role as indispensable companions in the sport of shooting. The backdrop features an idyllic rural setting, complete with lush greenery, mature trees, and a quaint thatched cottage emitting wisps of smoke, which suggests a possibly inhabited space or a resting point for the hunters.Morland’s use of light and shadow, coupled with soft yet dynamic brushstrokes, beautifully captures the essence of a breezy day in the countryside. The expansive sky, with its delicate blend of clouds, suggests the early hours of the morning, a prime time for such pastoral activities.

George Morland (26 June 1763 – 29 October 1804) was an English painter. His early work was influenced by Francis Wheatley, but after the 1790s he came into his own style. His best compositions focus on rustic scenes: farms and hunting; smugglers and gypsies; and rich, textured landscapes informed by Dutch Golden Age painting.
