More about this artwork

1827) Medium: Oil on canvasDescription: John Linnell's painting, "The Rest on the Flight into Egypt," evokes a serene yet poignant mood, capturing a Biblical moment with a unique blend of naturalism and spiritual sensitivity. Created around 1827, this artwork features the Holy Family during their clandestine journey fleeing from King Herod's decree. The painting provides a glimpse of a restful pause in a secluded wooded landscape. At the center, the Virgin Mary, draped in a reddish garment, tenderly holds the infant Jesus. To the left, Joseph stands watchfully, a staff in hand, embodying a protector's role. Both figures are rendered with modest and earthly tones, emphasizing their human vulnerability amidst divine undertaking. The scene is enveloped by robust and towering trees which dominate the canvas, their leaves rendered in meticulous detail that dances with the light filtering through. The earthy browns and greens of the landscape suggest it is either late summer or early autumn, adding a touch of temporal beauty to this timeless narrative. An ass, a common symbol of humility in religious iconography, grazes quietly nearby, further enhancing the painting's meditative quality.John Linnell, known for his landscapes and religious subjects, masters the use of light and shadow to create depth and emotion in this spiritual scene. "The Rest on the Flight into Egypt" not only portrays a moment of divine intervention but also reflects on themes of faith, protection, and the sanctity of family bonds.
