More about this artwork

This evocative painting titled "Kunstnerens Moder Frederikke Hammershøi (Portrait of the Artist’s Mother)" is a profound work by the Danish painter Vilhelm Hammershøi. Known for his subtle and muted tones, Hammershøi captures his mother, Frederikke, in a moment of serene introspection. Painted predominantly in subdued shades of grey and black, the artist employs light expertly to highlight the contours of his mother's face and her distinctive white headgear.Seated next to a partially visible door, Frederikke Hammershøi is portrayed profile, gazing contemplatively towards the left. The soft natural light bathes her face, creating a gentle contrast with the dark, almost indiscernible background. This manipulation of light not only focuses attention on her expression and pose but also adds a geometrical element to the composition through the door's subtle outline, adding an element of mystery and depth. The overall ambience of the painting is one of quiet dignity and poise, reflective of Hammershøi's typical style that often features interiors and solitary figures conveyed through a palette of cool, restrained colors. This particular work, through its personal connection and emotional subtlety, offers a deep look into the bond between artist and muse – in this case, the artist's own mother.
