More about this artwork

We are delighted to present Pierre Bonnard's mesmerizing landscape painting, "Soleil Couchant" (Sunset), crafted in 1920. This artwork invites viewers into a vivid, emotive exploration of light and color, encapsulating the tranquil yet powerful moments of sunset."Soleil Couchant" showcases Bonnard's exceptional use of color to convey mood and atmosphere. The canvas is dominated by a radiant horizon of fiery oranges and deep reds, suggesting the sun's last glow as it dips below the horizon. Below this spectacle, a serene strip of blue hints at the presence of a distant sea, anchoring the composition between the fervor of the sky and the earth's response. In the foreground, shadowed forms of trees and foliage, rendered in darker, cooler tones, stand in contrast to the illuminated sky, creating a dynamic interplay between light and dark. The brushwork is loose and expressive, typical of Bonnard's later works, where he often prioritized color over form to evoke sensory and emotional responses."Soleil Couchant" is not just a visual study of the day’s end but also an intimate portrayal of nature’s quiet spectacle.

Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) was a French post-impressionist painter, printmaker, and the leader of the Intimist art movement. He is regarded as one of the greatest colourists of modern art. Together with other young artists in Montmarte, Bonnard co-founded the group known as Les Nabis, translated from the arabic word “prophet”. He was known for a painting style that was very intimate, featuring friends in a garden, nudes, interiors and sunlit objects of everyday life. He began by painting in watercolor, composing scenes and deeply familiarizing himself with the subject, before transferring the composition to canvas. In many of his paintings, his mistress Marthe was the main subject. She was his most important model and was often pictured nude, after 30 years they finally married.
